Nestled along the Murray River on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, Cummeragunja (meaning “our home” in Yorta Yorta language) has long been a centre of Aboriginal resilience and pride. It was established in the late 1800s and became a self-sustained Aboriginal settlement, rich in culture, community, and self-determination.
In one of the most powerful moments in Australian history, over 200 residents of Cummeragunja staged a peaceful protest known as the Cummeragunja Walk-Off. This action was a stand against government oppression and poor living conditions—and it marked the beginning of a national movement for Aboriginal rights and justice.
