At Command Traffic Control, we proudly acknowledge our connection to Cummeragunja—a place of deep cultural and historical importance to the Yorta Yorta people, the Traditional Owners of this land.

Cummeragunja:
A Home of Strength and Spirit

Nestled along the Murray River on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, Cummeragunja (meaning “our home” in Yorta Yorta language) has long been a centre of Aboriginal resilience and pride. It was established in the late 1800s and became a self-sustained Aboriginal settlement, rich in culture, community, and self-determination.

The Cummeragunja Walk-Off (1939)

In one of the most powerful moments in Australian history, over 200 residents of Cummeragunja staged a peaceful protest known as the Cummeragunja Walk-Off. This action was a stand against government oppression and poor living conditions—and it marked the beginning of a national movement for Aboriginal rights and justice.

The Yorta Yorta People

We honour the Yorta Yorta people, custodians of the land, rivers, and stories of this region. Their enduring connection to Country continues to inspire us. With deep respect, we recognise their:

  • Totems, including the long-necked turtle and black swan
  • Language and Lore, passed through generations
  • Leaders, such as Sir Douglas Nicholls and William Cooper, who helped shape Australia’s civil rights journey
